My dream Ferrari…

Have fun No Comments »

If I were to ever be able to get a Ferrari, it would be the new mini 500. It’s an awesome looking vehicle, that I have to say I like even better than the Mini Cooper. I’d probably opt for the bright yellow as homage to one mini car I had decades ago — a Renault LeCar — I drove that car happily until some less than careful driver decided to take off it’s front end. While the price rage of this dream car makes it a dream car, at this point I have enough money for selected Ferrari parts…One must dream, so when it comes to car dreams? This would be mine.

LED-studded skirt

I was hoping there would be an actual picture of the skirt when it was lit, one was not included in the New Scientist article about it. Google image searching did not come up with anything either, though I did find this blog post on Digital Deities about — interactive fashion and they had some pretty amazing pictures of other clothing items that you may want to check out.

Imitation of Life

Another great classic movie is “Imitation of Life” from 1934, starring Collette Colbert. It’s for me a black and white movie that has some tear potential moments. The story line involves a widow with a young girl who befriends another woman with a young child, it touches on racism, feminism and shows the cultural differences between the white and black community at that time frame as well as how it began to change. It also deals with issues between mothers and daughters…This is not the trailer, it’s the first section of the movie.

All the President’s Men

I love classic movies, and of course in my other life, I cover politics so it’s no surprise to some of you that “All the President’s Men” is one of my favorites. At times I debate with myself as to which one would I rather be - the fact oriented Woodward (which in a way is more me with my job/reputation as a fact checker) or the more passionate Bernstein who wants to push the lines on fact and go into the conspiracy theory aspect of the story.

How to make an American quilt…

Winona Ryder’s acting was not what made this a good movie for me, she was okay but it was the stories that were told of the women involved in the quilting that made the movie one that I’m sorry that I missed watching earlier. This one does have a tear factor warning for those of us who are a bit more sentimental. It is a definite chick flick worth viewing…

Many are talking about Inception…

I haven’t seen Inception yet, though from what I can gather, the following preview only gives you a hint as to what the movie is like. It’s been interesting to read articles about it and the “spoiler alert” warnings so that those who want to experience the full movie don’t get any hints as to what happens…

Avoiding a steamy, hot kitchen…

Our house does not have air conditioning, so days like yesterday and today when it’s hot and humid, trying to cook in my kitchen is a miserable experience. Those are the days I declare “grill days” because it is much nicer to lounge on some outdoor chair cushions, even in the hot evenings of summer than it is to be in the kitchen. Thankfully the way the house is situated there’s no sun beating down on our porch area after the mid afternoon…

The slogan on more than a few signs outside of Google’s headquarters held by protesters - As this Wired article, points out.

Google better look out, it’s awakened the wrath of the Raging Grannies…

About a hundred net neutrality activists left their laptops at home Friday afternoon to gather at Google’s Silicon Valley headquarters to protest the search giant’s perceived betrayal of the movement for federal internet openness rules.

The protest group’s ranks included eager young activists, long-time technologists, first-time protesters and the ever-present Raging Grannies, who led anti-Google sing-alongs set to classic Americana songs.

One song according to CNETto the tune of “Clementine:

Can the chickens in the henhouse all be guarded by the fox?
Every farmer knows it won’t do and the henhouse needs a lock
So when Google says “just trust us” we all know it’s just a stall
The FCC must do its duty and protect access for all
Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling FCC
Keep computers safe from foxes,
Equal access is the key.

At first I thought the name of this website that carries a variety of products for children was called “Preppy Parents” — I did a brief double take till I looked at it again and saw it was “Peppy Parents” — while my baby days are long past, having grandchildren and knowing eventually I will most likely have more grandchildren keeping up to date on what’s popular, like this Ergo baby carrier is a great way to spend time on the internet. Especially when I am taking a needed political breather, no matter how short the respite.

Inside the world of Harry Potter

For those us fans of Harry Potter, this Times article is a highly recommended read. Part of:

But what’s here is choice. Unlike the candy-colored palette of any Disney park, black, gray and white are the dominant shades at the Wizarding World: the daunting slate of Hogwarts, the subtly ornamented shops, all capped by the rooftops’ perpetual snow, which in the oppressive summer heat serves as both a daydream and a taunt to sweltering guests. Cute, or Disney’s robust American form of it, is out. Quaint, British-style, is in. The Wizarding World is a bit like Stratford-upon-Avon, except that Rowling, not Shakespeare, is the presiding genius. And you don’t walk into the house she once lived in; you experience the dream she created.

Keep Your Kids Safe and Busy During Summer Months — Written by my friend Rico Cunningham

Summer months are sometimes more difficult to keep children busy and safe. Many families may be away on vacations. School is out and finding safe and enjoyable activities to do during long hot summer days is a challenge for parents who do not take vacations away from home.

Tips to help you get started:

Create a weekly planning calendar before summer arrives that includes activities your children enjoy such as day trips to the beach or local swimming pools, indoor craft projects for rainy days. Ask your children for ideas of their own to incorporate into your weekly schedule.

Other ideas may include washing the car and running through the water sprinkler; fill up a small pool and wash the dog. CLICK here for some more ideas.

A home security alarm is always advisable especially if you leave your children with a sitter or alone for summer projects of your own.

Tips to keep your children safe when swimming:

Adult supervision is always a must

Use an age appropriate flotation device. For best results use a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket.

Do not allow children with diarrhea to swim. Germs are easily spread into the water that can make other people sick.

Teach your children NOT to swallow pool water.

Always shower or bathe children before and after swimming. Allow children bathroom breaks regularly. Use a thick layer of SPF 15 or higher sun block on children 6 months and older. Younger children should be kept out of the sun. Apply sun block 30 minutes before children will be in the sun and reapply every few hours or more often while children are swimming.

Other sun safety tips for children:

Use a hat, sunglasses and loose fitting, light colored clothes.

Planning ahead helps parents to prepare for summertime fun and safety for their children.

Over half of US own digital cameras

In 2007 about 40% of American families owned digital cameras — three years later it’s being reported that over half of American families own a digital camera. Add to that the number of people that have cameras on their cell phones and it’s easy to see how the ability to share photos using social media like twitter, facebook and myspace have increased in popularity and sharing family moments as well as at times news moments.

Want to watch a movie that will make you wish you had access to a good testosterone booster? Then you might want to check out Ironman 2 - the music choices alone are enough to make you want to rock the house. The trailer is very well done as far as making you really want to drop everything and head out to watch the movie. Maybe at the drive in since it’s that time of year. :-)

The advantages of wholesale…

We’re on a tight budget, so saving money is important. Yet I don’t have the extra money to stock up on things like I’d like to at times, even given that, there are times when you can find some great deals that are impossible to resist through a wholesale distributor. Like a Multifunctional Shower with an original MSRP $2,450.00 can be bought for around $250.00. Or a huge assortment of bedding and other household decor items with comforter sets, sheet sets, Pillows, that retails at $1.2K that will go for less than the price of one comforter set…

Drunken Justice League

This does sound like fun from Wired:

Batman, Iron Man and the Hulk walk into a bar. Where they run into Doc Octo-Mom, Male Drag Wonder Woman, Brief Justice and The Panty Raider and dozens of other superheroes and costumed criminals.

Everybody gets smashed.

It’s just another fun-filled night on the town with the Drunken Justice League, the loose association of caped crusaders and supervillains behind the annual Superhero Crawl in Reno, Nevada.

“Most of the heroes seem to be affected by Jell-O shots,” evil masterminds Gator Lanphear and Matt Goedert told Wired.com in an e-mail interview dispatched from Drunken Justice League headquarters. “It’s their kryptonite, so the villains are always trying to buy them multiple rounds.”

The JDL expects 800 to 1,000 costumed cocktailers at this year’s event, which takes place Saturday in “The Biggest Little City in the World.”

Because of a chance comment in the Toledo Free Press Star about Lisbeth Salander, I became curious, so I searched Netflix and found one of the movies with her online - The girl with the dragon tattoo. I normally don’t like foreign films with subtitles. This one was definitely worth watching, the plot line was not predictable. It’s def not for the kiddies though…

YouTube launches new mobile site…

Those of you with phones that access the internet will be interested in this one - Wired reports about YouTube’s upgrade to their mobile site. Sounds like some of the loading and lagging issues for mobile users may be over:

The mobile version of Google’s video-sharing website received an upgrade Thursday. The new m.youtube.com has a bunch of new features, including high-quality video playback in the browser using HTML5.

Surf to YouTube’s mobile site with any modern mobile with a browser that supports HTML5’s

The old site on an iPhone used to launch the YouTube native app, taking you out of the browser. In fact, the first time you visit the site on an iPhone, you’ll be prompted to “install” a bookmark on your home screen. This is likely a step to move people away from the YouTube iPhone app and toward the web-based app.

Another thing I’ve been doing to pass the time is the virtual version of window shopping, I’ve found quite a few things that if money was no object I’d love to have as well as a few things that the idea of even owning, makes me laugh. Which as you know laughter is the best medicine, or at least so they say. I’ve also found some good deals along the way, like tiger direct coupons and some other coupon deals that are only a mouse click away for you…

Friday night lights

I’ve been dealing with some health issues, so I’ve been trying to take it easy and during the moments when I’m under the influence of pain medication I try to stay away from my blogs (smile). Since I also have not been able to sleep some nights this has made me watch more things on Netflix, so I’ve been checking out series. Few have grabbed my interest but Friday Night Lights did. I watched all of seasons 1 and 2 though I was really disappointed in some of the story line changes that took place from 2 to 3 - they didn’t fit. My interest started to wane as 3 was not as good as season one or two but I did finish watching all of 3. Four is not available to watch online through Netflix yet, so when that does happen I’ll see if the show improves or continued to decline…
